Wollongong is a long, narrow city, and the block you're on shapes the build. In the northern suburbs (Thirroul, Austinmer, Bulli, Woonona) plenty of homes sit on sloping land below the escarpment, where a deck or patio needs stepped footings, taller posts or a raised floor to meet the house. Closer to Lake Illawarra the ground tends to be flatter, and the brief is more about shade and space than levels.

Do I need council approval for a patio in Wollongong?+
It depends on size, height and how close it sits to the boundaries. Many patios qualify as exempt development, or through a Complying Development Certificate (CDC), a faster certifier-issued pathway. Others need a development application with Wollongong City Council. We assess your project up-front and handle the lodgement for you.
Can you build a deck on a steep block in the northern suburbs?+
Yes. Sloping blocks are common from Thirroul to Woonona, and we design the subfloor for the fall of the land: stepped footings, engineered posts and bracing sized for the height. Where a deck sits well above the ground, balustrades and stairs are part of the design from the start.
